    Backpackoree Class Suggestions Needed

    Greetings List,

I am in charge of our Boy Scout "Backpackoree" (camporee). Multiple classes on many aspects of backpacking and Leave No Trace will be held. One of the scheduled class is on hammock camping. The leaders recruited are hammock campers but asked me to ask the group for suggestions on what would be important information to share with the scouts. The class is 45 minutes long.

They are going to show different types of hammocks, how to hang a hammock, making a easy hammock, and importance of insulation (pads, underquilts)

    Any other ideas, suggestions????

    Thanks in advance,

    Curtis Ware

    How about some fundamental concepts?

Nothing touches the ground except the soles of your shoes.

Find the adjustments that make for a flatter lay.

Pack you tarp as a quick-deploy article, so the rest of your set up is out of the rain.

Since I began using my hammock for camping this is the hardest thing & I'm still trying to master it. I never had any trouble with waking up when I was a ground dweller.

This is one of hammock camping's greatest strengths. The ability to quickly get out of the rain & the ability to pack up in the rain and keep your gear dry.

Just one time out will prove that point! In my opinion it's one of the top three
comfort, flexibility (as in places you can sleep) and the protection of the tarp. Beats a tent hands down.

WARNING: Will discuss Rhurbarb Strawberry Pie and Livermush at random.

Camp site selection is usually one of the classes taught in Adult Outdoor leader class. For Scouts, they too should be getting something about that, maybe along with the LNT class??? In the hammock class, they should get some info on the differences being looked for, when selecting a camp site for a tent vs for a hammock. The Hammock can be set up in areas that are not suitable for a tent.

Show the advantage of being able to set up the tarp all by itself. Like if you're backpacking, it's raining and it's lunch time. You can set up the tarp and cook under it. While the scout with the tent sits out in the rain to eat.

Show the advantage of setting up the hammock with the tarp over it but have the tarp folded up over to the back side. Scout can sit in hammock and relax. And then at night, if the tarp becomes needed, scout can unfold the tarp, stake it out on that side and go back to sleep.

Talk about the speed of putting up that tarp in the rain and then being under the tarp and keeping all their gear dry!!!

No poles to snake through tent sleeves!!

Uses simple knots that Scouts are already taught.

A scout can "customize" their hammock!! It can be made to fit them (wide or long as they need). Shockcord tensioners can be put on the tarp. Different colors. Insulation can be made to suit their needs.

    Don't forget SAFETY!

Where the ground has only a thin layer over rock, and it's a damp area, it's a lot easier for trees to uproot!

Also, be sure to check for widowmakers! Walk all around the trees- sometimes when you check from a different angle, you can see some that you couldn't on the other side.

The variations of the way the tarp can be set-up, i.e., baker hut, lean-to, diagonal, winter hut, etc. As well as the advantage of raising and lowering the tarp, as weather predicts.
