This past weekend we Canoed the Big Manistee between 66 bridge and Coster Rd. The water was up and somewhat muddy but had a wonderful trip. We saw no other canoes or boats on the river. It was wonderful. We camped at old U.S. Hwy 131 State forest Campground.

Nice! I don't know how you guys do it though. I think hiking and camping in this hot weather is 1000x more hardcore than -5°!! I can't do it.

So I'm a weekend backpacker and my first chance to get out this summer will be in a couple weeks. Is this trail (the whole 24 miles loop of Manistee River Trail and NCT) just too crazy busy to be enjoyable? I prefer loop trails when I can, which is what drew me to this. I do other sections of the NCT mostly east of there pretty regularly and find it to be pretty secluded.

I did the whole loop yesterday, great workout.... It was crowded on the mrt side, saw about 50 people, yes 50...
    That loop is always enjoyable...
We would be one step closer to world peace, if everyone slept in a hammock..

Wow, 50 people during the midweek ? Now I remember why on my last three trips up there I always camp in the pines at Eddington Creek on the NCT site. It's still a beautiful place to hike, especially in the fall and early spring.

Nice spot Dave. I never make a fire though because I'm afraid I'll burn the place down! And I don't want to ruin that nice soft carpet of pine needles anyway. It's so perfect it looks like a man-made camp spot

That answers my question! I'd rather avoid 50 people
