I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.
"Bless you child, when you set out to thread a needle don't hold the thread still and fetch the needle up to it; hold the needle still and poke the thread at it; that's the way a woman most always does, but a man always does t'other way."

and have made lots of stuff.
Here's what I made a couple of weeks ago with that exact model of machine:

@go2outdoors - Check out the above CL post above from your Watertown, NY link. I recommend the Singer 401A which purportedly comes with all attachments, owners' manual, and a folding table. I have this same model as well as its brother, the Singer 403A, and its cousin, the Singer 500A (two of those). They are an excellent family of machines from a performance/reliability pov. They are easy to maintain with an excellent manual, many YouTube how-to videos and commentary by online sewing forum/blogger posts. Attachments and other parts for Singer slant shank machines are plentiful on ebay, etsy, and bonanza. I currently own 20+ vintage thread injectors: Singers, Kenmores, and two Japanese clones; and this is my favorite family of machines to actually sew on.
If this 401A passes your in-person inspection, $75 seems to be a fair starting price for a CL negotiaton and you should be able to charm your way to buying it for $60 or so, but $75 is a fair price if he/she does not budge on price. Since you are storage space limited, you may want to "dump" the table and sell it on CL as a purchase cost offset (fair price on CL, depending on condition, $5-$15) and the 401A operates just fine in table top mode without its cabinet.
If I were forced to own only one thread injector for hammock and gear construction, my Singer 401A would be my choice. I like this family of machines a lot! Let us know what you go with.

I had never seen one before, but yesterday we drove by a Goodwill Clearance Center. They just have everything in big bin-like tables or sitting along the wall. Saw and old brown crinkle paint machine of some brand in a table that I had no interest in and figured that's what I kind of expected to see in a Goodwill Clearance Center. So, turned around and started to walk out when my wife said "what's that?". There was a Singer 401a with a carry case (no attachments). Runs fine and is in B+ condition, so I took it home. All sewing machines were $10. You might see if you have one of those clearance centers in your area.
