Looking for a Bear Canister BearVault

I'm heading out West in a couple months and don't want to deal with the hassle of stringing up a bear bag. Been there, done that, got the tee shirt
I'm looking to purchase a BV500 or something comparable. I need to carry food for two so the BV450 won't be big enough unless you have two of them. I'm hoping not to pay the new retail price. These containers a pricey.

    Thanks, Ken

Not sure where you are headed, but a lot of places rent them. Might save the hassle of flying or buying them. I rented one for my son last time we went out to RMNP at a local outfitter.

REI has them on sale right now at 25% off. However, you may want to re-think carrying one. Those suckers are heavy and a pain to open when the plastic gets cold. And really, how hard is it to string a bear bag?

Bear cans are required in a lot of places. Mostly west coast.. But are also required in parts of NY and other states.

Just wanted to chime in to say that if you are hiking in the Adirondack High Peaks region of NY, BearVault canisters are still not recommended. (See this notice at Bear Vault web site -- text is shown below.) So, if you think you might want to use your canister(s) in the High Peaks, you might want to consider a different brand. Since I already owned two BearVaults during the time of pillaging by the infamous black bear "Yellow Yellow" (named for the color of her ear tags), I modified them so that they each have a locking bolt which prevents the lid from being unscrewed unless the bolt is first removed with screwdriver (or coin). Of course, I'm sure that voids any warranty . It seems like a robust fix, so I have no worries and sleep well at night. I've taken them into the High Peaks many times, but they have yet to be tested by a bear, so I suppose there's still a chance that the bear might win.

    From BearVault website:
Yellow-Yellow was a bear located in the High Peaks regions of Adirondack State Park who could open BearVaults. She died in 2012 however as of June 2014 there is at least one other bear in that area that can open BearVaults. Accordingly we still recommend that BearVaults NOT be used for that area.
Apparently Yellow-Yellow trained some of her offspring in the art of fine dining on gorp and Mountain House.

Yea.. Yellow Yellow was taken by a hunter in the 2012 Season. I personally use a Bear Can throughout NY and I think the bear can regulation needs to be expanded to cover the entirety of the 'dacks and Catskills.. They are everywhere in this state.

But I think we've thread jacked the OP's WTB thread enough
