    synthetic underquilt question

I am making a synthetic underquilt, and wanted to know if there is another method of construction besides sewing the 2 cloth layers and the insulation together in the edges and turning the whole thing inside out? (Ive done this before and really dont enjoy forcing the "insulation sandwich" in to the sewing machine!) Is there another way to secure the insulation edges to the cloth outer layer?

Are you using one solid sheet of insulation, or stacked layers? if it is just one huge slab o' fluff, I would imagine you could make the cover/bag, turn it inside out and slide the insulation in, then put in the quilting tie-down stitches, and close the end seam. It might leave gaps at the edges, but with a large flat area to work in you can easily ensure there are no bumps or wrinkles of the insulation inside; before you tie it in place.
    Just a thought! KM

I have 2 layers of insulation. I thought about your idea, but was wondering if the isulation would be secure enough just being held in place by the quilting ?

That depends entirely upon the type of synthetic insulation you are using. Some is more stable than others. Not being well versed in the varieties of synth I'll let someone else elaborate on that. But using some types of synth it would be sturdy and stable enough.

    Not that I know of....
I'd guess you could quilt loop the entire thing but I'd guess the insulation would shift alot and leave you with cold spots
FWIW, I sew the edge insulation down so the presser foot doesn't catch the insulation. That seemed to help alot (but I never sewed multiple layers either)

One possible alternative would be to sew the quilt just as it will be when finished and then bind the edges with binding tape or some other material. But you still have to get the whole quilt sandwich through the machine.

I sew mine with the insulation down and the 2 layers of fabric on top. I don't have any problems with it feeding but occasionally it will get caught in the needle. I have sewn up to 3" of insulation this way (wasn't too much fun though).
