Memorial Day Weekend 2 overnights in the Whites

    Day 1
Saturday morning started by driving the couple hundred miles to the Ferncroft parking lot which was overflowing out onto the road with other hikers cars. I snagged a spot and took off up the Dicey Mill trail and did the loop around the top of Passaconaway making really good time. I descended by heading over to the Square Ledge trail and down the Old Mast Road trail. I found myself a place to camp off trail about a half mile from the parking lot. It was a clear night so I went tarpless and could hear the river flowing just down the hill all night.

some sights on the Dicey Mill trail

Couple of views near the top of Passaconway

    Summit cairn

    Day 2
I hiked the short distance back to the car and headed up to the Lincoln Woods Trail Head, which was full with many people parking along the Kancamangas Highway. I waited a little bit for some people to leave so I wouldn't have to leave the the car parked on the road overnight.
I hiked out to Owls head mountain from the Lincoln woods trailhead. I went up to the summit back down and back along the trail for about a mile and set up camp and got my camp chores done just before dark.
This would end up being just over an 18 mile round trip.

The unofficial marker to turn into the woods and head straight uphill to the unforgiving slide. I talked with a hiker on the way out that said the slide was a lot more stable and settled before both "super storms"

    Owls Head summit cairn

Still several patches of snow like this on top of Owls Head some right on the trail and all still pretty solid.

Franconia Ridge as seen from the owls head slide

Camp on the way back from owls head

One of two kinda sketchy water crossings

The trails out to and up owls head are generally not maintained.

    Day 3
Hiked back to car via same route. I then headed over to the Woodstock station for a delicious burger and a maple Porter brewed in house.

Looks like a good time was had. That's some serious woodpecker work on that tree.
Everyone ought to believe in something....I believe I'll go set up the hammock!

Nice pics Josh. The Kancamagus Highway area is one of my favorite areas in the Whites. Going to make it up there this Summer.

Hope you can make the Harold Parker hang in July.

    All the best!

Nice report! Glad you had a good time. Has the mud season ended there?

===> Great TR Josh! I love that area of NH! I run a golf tourney at the Owl's Nest Golf Club every year. I also like to fly fish and stealth camp right off Rte 112/175 in North Woodstock on the Pemi. Still looked a bit muddy from your pics, but also looked like a great hike/hang!

    Thanks for the hike-along!

Can't say for sure about everywhere especially farther north, but it was fine on all the trails I was on. I only had to deal with it in areas where you would expect, like low lying trail areas near rivers or beaver ponds.

Looks like you had a blast. Views from Passaconway and the sunset of Franconia Ridge are great. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys. Ya such a great area, you can't go wrong with Exit 32.
Here's some random shots from the Kanc and the Lincoln woods parking lot. I need a phone with a better camera, these really don't do the place justice
