VIDEO & Pictures: Portaging in Kawartha Highlands

The lakes are Algonquin Provincial Park were still not iced-out by the end of may, so some friends and I went portaging at Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park (7 friends total). We started at Long Lake Lodge, where we rented canoes, and then headed west to Cox lake where we stayed for 3 nights.

I didn't go into my setup in the video, but here it is. I switched it up this time and went back to my first hammock - my Eno Doublenest with Whoopies. I used my HammockGear Burrow 40 (with 2oz overfill, all in the footbox), Warbonnet 3-Season Yeti, a Thermarest ZLite foam pad cut-to-size to cover the back of my legs and feet, and a Warbonnet Mambajamba with door kit (but I didn't use the doors at all). I'm 6'2'', so I need a decent sized pad to cover my legs since the torso-length UQ doesn't cover past my butt.

    Here are the pictures!

The only reason I brought 4 Coffee Crisp was to make all of the non-Canadians jealous - especially you, Shug

    Hope you enjoy the video,

    YellowRain

    Nice vid.

I've only been up to the Kawartha Highlands Prov. Park in the winter, but it looks really nice in paddling season.

Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed. I've heard that Kawartha is nice in the winter, but I have never been. Did you snowshoe across the lakes?

We've done both the lakes and the forest trails. It really depends on the conditions. Deep snow on the lake is pretty grueling to slog through but if you can manage to follow a well packed snowmobile trail then you're laughing. The forest trails are nice, but the ups and downs all but killed me last winter. Great park in the winter.

Very nice video. Looks like it was a great guys trip. That wilderness chair looked comfortable, and would be fun to build I bet.

Thanks for sharing and taking us with you.

Very cool. It's the downhills that kill me - I can take the muscle pain, but joint pain is the worst. Did you do a trip report? I'd be really interested in checking it out. I want to see what Kawartha looks like in the winter.

    Genuinely glad you enjoyed it.

It was a neat chair, a fun project when you have time to kill at the site.
In case anyone is interested, my friend said he followed these videos to make the chair:
