    Hey All,

I had my first hang last weekend on BLM land near Durango, at 37.21960, -107.6967. I arrived at the site at around 11pm, so I had to find suitable trees in the dark. I set up the "Yukon Outfitters MG-10501gy Mosquito Hammock Grey" that I got on woot!.

    Successes
    • I found a tree that I didn't have to remove branches from in order to hang
    • I found that a porch mode setup was easier than an A frame, as running the tarp parallel to the branches was relatively simple.
    • My hips and shoulders didn't hurt in the morning - a problem that I have with the ground, or even in beds.
    • my tarp and hammock never touched the ground

    Lessons Learned
    • Night temps may have been in the 50s? My pad was warm enough for my back, but it was impossibly difficult to reposition. Next time I will put more effort into positioning the pad before I commit to sleep.
    • I have ~6 foot webbing. Before this trip I practiced my setup on some particularly large trees, at least 6 foot circumference. These trees had maybe 1 foot circumference. I ended up redoing the webbing with more wraps to make it shorter. It would have beed much faster to tie a marlin spike.
    • I left my (waterproof) bag in the car, and didn't bring a ground tarp for the stuff I had with me. The car was only 200 meters away, but walking required watching your step.

Lessons Not Learned (more reseach/testing needed)
    • The foot end of my sleeping bag was slow to warm up.
    • I used my bag upsidedown and unzipped like a UQ. I ended up covering my face with the hood. This was fine in the desert, but in other conditions it might be too humid.
    • I didn't use a ridge line. not sure I can with the way the netting is on this hammock.

    Summary
Overall my sleep was not quite as good as I had hoped, but was far better than the ground sleeping I've done at this spot before. I need to tinker more with sag and pad. I'm really looking forward to my next trip.

Glad you got out there. Good attitude--there is always something that went right, something that could have gone better, and lessons to be learned either way. But one never learns them unless they venture forth as you did.

Congratulations on your outing. It's smart to start next to the car. A ridgeline is key to consistent comfort. There are threads on the forum discussing how to do it on your hammock.

Swapping to hammocks usually takes a couple of nights to work out the kinks. But, a rough night's sleep in the hammock easily beats rocks and roots and the hard ground.

    Good luck with the tinkering.

I made a fixed ridgeline for my son's YO. It's a 90" Zing-It dogbone that's outside the netting between the shock cords holding up the net. I pass the loops of the hammock suspension through the eyes of the dogbone.

    Nice hang, BTW

Nice report, I've also been tinkering with my setup trying to drop weight, find the perfect angle for a perfect sleep, and figuring out what I need and what i can leave at home. Keep at it and thanks for sharing.
