Survey - sleeping bag use

I'm curious. several months ago I got my new WBBB and have enjoyed it all summer. With the cooler weather settling in, I'm now looking to more insulation. Since I don't yet have an UQ setup, I've used a sleeping bag with pretty good success, however the zip on the bag is right and the BB is left, so getting in requires effort to smooth out the lumps. I'm curious how many of the folks here use bags or skip the bag and go directly with an UQ system.

So here's the survey

Q1 - do you rely solely on a sleeping bag /pad when hammocking in cooler weather (below 50)

Q2 - do you use a pad with an UQ

Q3 - do you use an UQ with a bag or without (not counting bags used for TQ)

Q4 - if using an UQ, what do you use for top coverage (i.e. open bag, TQ, blanket, etc.)

Q5 - if not using a bag, do you use any bedding in the hammock (under you)

Why not just turn your head end around? Then you have right handed zipper on both sides.

Don't own a WBBB I see

On the BB, the foot box is added for the flat lay and while I know some do turn around, it really isn't made for use in either direction. I've already decided that the next BB I get (my son is already asking for mine) I'll ask Brandon to reverse the zip for me - unless I abandon the bag altogether - hence the survey.

Here are my answers to your questions.

No Ill also use a UQ

Q2 - do you use a pad with an UQ
I have but got condensation when I did

Q3 - do you use an UQ with a bag or without (not counting bags used for TQ)

I use a open bag or quilt.

just a silk sleeping bag liner that I cut up and re-sewed. keeps my gear a bit cleaner from my trekking dirts.

Sometimes I will choose to use a pad, but when I do that it's normally with a double layer hammock so that the pad goes between the layers. I don't use a bag in a hammock, though, only top quilts.

Certainly. It is very easy to extend the temp rating of either a pad or UQ by using them in combination.

Without. Again, I don't use bags, only top quilts.

No, typically only an underquilt beneath the hammock and top quilt on top of me.

I use an UQ with a top quilt. Tried pads, prefer quilts.

My experience so far, beyond some testing with a new UQ, has all been with pads. I've used pads in a pad pocket, pads outside the pad pocket, pads with a sleeping bag set up like a quilt, and pads with me fully inside the sleeping bag.

In very cold weather, I prefer to be inside the sleeping bag, regardless of what I'm using for bottom insulation. I like the way the bag moves with me if I roll, and I like being able to cinch a mummy bag's hood down over my face so all that's open is a tiny hole to breathe through. I just can't imagine a hood velcro'ed on to a top quilt will ever be that warm.

This season, we're hopefully making the switch to UQ's - we've got a couple of custom UQ's from Hangnout's daughter with a few tricks up our sleeve, and MrsMustardman is probably gonna end up making us some serious winter UQ's too, with some mega loft. She just finished up her own winter tarp, and I've got my OES 12x10 ready to go. BRING ON THE COLD!!!

dude all i need is a 5.00 dollar army surplus pad and a 20 degree bag as a quilt
down to single digits,been doing it for years

No sleeping bag. No UQ. No quilt, either.

I use a ¼" Oware pad which, with the rest of my sleep system based on cold weather clothing, is good to 25°.
