Building a new hammock

Need some feedback.

I have decided to build a double layer Asymmetrical Hammock based on the pattern found here on another thread.

I plan to whip the ends and suspend it similar to Risks ZHammock.

Right now I have about 8 yards of 1.6 oz ripstop and 14 yds of 1oz parachute ripstop both from walmart ($1.50 per yard).

I weigh 235 so do I need 2 layers of 1.6 or will 1.6 for the top and 1oz for the bottom work.

I plan to use a 3/8 blue pad (not walmart, seems denser) with wings in the sandwich when needed with a bug net for warmer weather and use a 1.25 oz tyvek garlington insulator type setup as an extender.

Trying to keep my big 3 at 6-7#. My sleeping bag and pack are 3#

While a 1.6/1.0oz will probably work I would go dbl 1.6 for comfort & safety. The Walmart $1 bin is a great place for cheap fabric, but keep in mind it is there for a reason. You will only save around 3.3ozs using the 1.0.

Both actually look good and dont have any readily visable flaws.

I bought some 1.4 oz ripstop there a while back and it is DWR'd and very nice.

This 1.6 oz seems to have very little DWR so maybe that is the reason. 1.6oz is an odd weight too so maybe that could be the reason. Who knows.

The 1.0 oz material is super thin and no DWR at all.

Better test the hammock out over a matress for a while.

Combine the two fabrics for your double layer. It should give you the support and safety margin you need while weighing less than two layers of the heavy stuff.

Which layer on top?

I would put the lighter layer on top (against my body). Don't know why, just what springs to mind when asked.

Put the layer you don't mind looking at while hanging in the hammock on top - or has the nicer feel since you'll be sleeping on it. Structurally, it shouldn't matter enough to warrant a choice one way or the other.

1.4oz with DWR is probably only a 1.1oz fabric before the coating. Two layers of this won't drop you on your butt however at 235 you're going to get some stretch. That will effect your comfort. Heavier fabric = less stretch, it a trade-off.
