We were up there last year in early September and had no issues with bugs at all. Had a fantastic time.
The other advantage of going in September is the fall color. The area around Lutsen in mid-September can be spectacular.

It also depends on the year. This year I took a couple trips in June and bugs were no problem. Last year they were terrible. As far as my favorite month, I love October (I prefer to hike in cool weather).
Went mid Setptember last year, no bugs and leaves were amazing. Comfortable hiking during the day, cool at night....perfect.
OK ,thanks all. I think I got a date of Sept. 18th through the 22nd. I hope the colors are turning then! Think I'm going to do a in and back out up by the Lake Agnus / Poplar River.
Do a one way and use the shuttle back or hitch. As George Patton once said "I don't like paying for the same real estate twice".
