I am 5'11" and 165 lbs. I started with a Hennessy Hex Asym Zip at 8.3 ft. long - I used it for two years and didn't know any better. I thought it was great. Next I moved to a Byer Moskito Hammock - very short and very stretchy. It was not the hammock for me.

Next I moved to the BIAS Weight Weenie Micro - wowza - the 11 ft. length was just incredible. For the first time I slept like a baby in my hammock. I've since tried BIAS WWM double layers, a BIAS Hiker Lite, tablecloth hammocks, and now I'm on the Dutch PolyD 1.4 hammock. With all these models I sleep like a baby because the length is perfect (note: the BIAS Hiker Lite is only 55" wide and it takes me a while to find the sweet spot).

So for me, I need at least 10.5 ft. in length, and 58" in width. It makes me a very happy camper!

I have hammocks ranging from 11.5' down to 8.5' and the one thing I know is every single one of them is better than the ground.

Yes it was a joke, the real answer is what ever works best for each individual. I have a few DIY hammocks ranging from 9' to 11' and personally I like them all. I'm 5'11" and I tend to go for the 11' hammocks because of the extra room it has at each end.

I wound up adding a foot to each end for a total of 11ft. and find it much more comfortable. At 11ft. it doesn't squeeze as much and I don't have any problems with my sleeping bag slipping out. It is also much easier to lay flat or on my side now at an angle.
11 feet. long, 60 inches (give or take an inch).
This is very helpful information for me. Thank you. I am 6 foot tall 300 lbs. Currently. What weight nylon did you use and did you double it?

Pretty much every hammock ive made, has been twice the length of the persons height. To me, its a pretty good rule of thumb and i have had no complaints from anyone i have made them for.

The factor 2 is imo a bit too much. You can get problems with such lenght to find a good distance between trees and your suspension would hang always very high. A better multiplier is imo 1.618. This is the Golden Cut ratio:

    Say you are 77" tall.
    77 x 1.618 = 124.5" hammock length
    124.5" * 0.83 = 103" RL length

I added one foot more for extra comfort.

Therefore, if I would manufacture hammocks for other people I would offer custom-made hammocks for any body size according to the Golden Cut ratio and offer an extra comfort option too.

This formula is very consistent with my hammock length experiments. A useful formula for finding suitable length for those opting not to use a standard 10 or 11 foot hammock.
