A decent sized stick about 3 inches long and finger thick outta work. I find them all day long and don't worry about the weight! Since the suspension sits on the knot, it doesn't have to be that thick.
My hammock...is MyD0j0!
I keep a pair of Aluminum Arrow Shaft toggles hanging from the sun visor in my car like tiny little wind chimes.
For consistency, when hammocking I always use arrow shafts with 1.75 mm Lash-it spliced through one side in a continuous loop.
Did I mention I can be a little OCD about such things?

I have a 1m length of 6mm aluminium tube & cut from that.
Like OCDave mentioned, I use some left over pieces of aluminum arrow shafts that I had laying around. I have had those pieces laying around for about 10 years and finally found something to use them for! I took several and cut them into 3" pieces and drilled a small hole through one end to put some lash-it through. They are light and work great!
Aluminum arrow shafts, sticks, ink pens, aluminum Slurpee straws....anything that can resist the crushing force of the MSH. Some folks are even using the rolled up ends of their straps. I always tightly roll the ends of my tree straps and hot glue them in the arrow shafts, never lost a toggle.

No one's mentioned plastic coat hangers or, my current favorite, knitting needles (they're hollow aluminum tubes in lots of nice colors; look for them at your favorite thrift store for pennies).

Surely, God could have made a better way to sleep.
Surely, God never did.
Maybe I'm the oddball here, (usually am!) but I use 1/2" conduit. Small toggles like arrow shafts or similar seem to be tougher for the strap to bend around and tighten against. By using something that's 1/2" diam, the strap kinks less and doesn't become as stretched and deformed. Plus the increased size makes them almost impossible to snap.
