    muletape

Anyone ever heard of this? Last summer we upgraded our phone lines coming into the building at work so they could handle much more data. This required fishing new lines underground from the pole at the road which is a few hundred feet. The phone guys used muletape to pull it through. It says right on the product 1800#. I'm pretty sure this is it.

They said they only use it for one pull, then get rid of it. They asked if I wanted it, and of course I accepted. The stuff I have measures 1/2".

I want to try a ring buckle system on my Claytor and I'm going to try this stuff on the hammock end and use the original claytor straps around the tree. I just wanted some opinions on this and on the mule tape.

It's been mentioned a few times. I did find one thread specifically about mule tape and a search reveled it mention several times in random threads. I think the jury is still out on how well it works...

Says the stuff is "lubricated for easy pulling" not sure how good that would be on gear.

I didn't weigh it but it is heavy for its size.

Not to drift this in another direction, but I remember reading somewhere that some of the ultralight crowd (not necessarily hammockers) were experimenting with kevlar pulling tape because it's really light compared to a rope of equivalent strength.

But if this is heavy for it's size, I don't know what to make of it.

Problem w/ any raw Kevlar is that its abrasion resistance is poor. Sheathed is a different story - any idea if the tape is coated?

For my money, Spectra (Dyneema, UHMWPE, etc) are the way to go for light and strong.

Heck I think they make Spectra fishing line up to 100LB test. Just run that back and forth 10 times. I may try that just for giggles (I have some 20lb test here - its as thin as 4lb test mono - super thin.)

So... about that tape... <end thread theft>

I actually used this for my ring suspension on my first solo trip in August. It was a little heavy, but it was strong. Even with it only being 1/2" wide it worked well for the ring suspension. I am also planning to try to make some slap straps out of it as well, as soon as I can getmy moms sewing machine.

I was thinking about that some time back...found some 250# test PowerPro at Cabelas.

It's still not strong enough to hang from, although it might work for tarps. In my experience with PP up to 65# test, it would be too prone to tangles to be worth the trouble.

I've been hanging on mule tape for over a month straight. Very solid stuff, holding knots nicely. I also stitched some with loops and they are working good too. 1800 lbs. breaking/pulling stength. Found it in Shipsewanna, IL, at the giant flea market, 140' for 10 bucks? or so. I like it, and its working good with marlinspike hitch as well. Does snag on stuff, but no structural problems yet.
