    Kelty Tarp

Being just a Newbie, I would like some opinions on the Kelty Tarps that I saw at REI. 12x10 was the one I was looking at.

Jalastra, welcome to the community and I hope you enjoy the time here.

Ok, to your question I have a few comments.

I could only find the 12x12 at REI, if you have a link to the one you mention I will be happy to look at it and give thoughts.

On the 12x12 here are my opinions.

It weighs in at over 40 ounces. That is one heavy "single season" Tarp. I decided last year to buy one Tarp that I could use through out the year. It cost me a little more but when you consider it has doors to block out the wind during the winter and it weighs almost half of the tarp your looking at I think it is a steal. In the summer you can take the doors off and lighten the weight even more.

My suggestion is go to Warbonnet and buy a Superfly. You will be able to use it in any season, and you can't beat the customer service.

I just picked up a Noah 12x12 Tarp (literally - just now).

This is my first "real" tarp so I can't give you any good comparisons (Clark JH tarp in the mail though).

This thing is BIG. The reason I got it was because I will hang w/ my Fiancee under it (we both have home-built 1.1 hammocks that should get us by for a bit).

Anywho - the tarp is cut concat so it hangs pretty tight but I would suggest using more guying if there is going to be any real wind. PLENTY of tie-out points sown in. Overall construction looks good - next weekend will be its first field test so I will have more to say then.

Right now it looks pretty good in the back yard

Maybe someone else here has another Kelty tarp and could comment?

    Best wishes,

    XexorZ

    Update:

It got pretty darn gusty in my neck of the woods (I'd say EASY 30mph gusts) so I took down the tarp in diamond configuration before it took off (was only using 2 stakes).

I got to thinking, "can this thing be used in higher winds and winter?"

Welp, I think it will work (I'm new to tarps so please, input greatly appreciated)

I think this will work up to medium winds like today. With the side-guys out I think it will work in high winds. I should also be able to make some doors for it and have a 4 season tarp!

So if the above guesses are correct, for < $60 this tarp isn't half bad.

On top of that I got it at REI today (new store gift-card giveaway - got $25 off) and 20% off the top for being a member w/ coupon - paid ~$25 for it

Anyone else have a opinion of this tarp?
