    Suggestions for Adirondacks/Green Mountain camping?

I'm going to be heading on a last-minute trip to visit some friends who just moved to Albany. We were thinking of camping Saturday night. Any suggestions on places in the Adirondacks or Green Mountains we might be able to go camping? Definite value for more remote sites. Nothing worse than an obnoxious, loud camper 10 feet away or the incessant sound of a highway really close by.

Is camping allowed in State Forests/Wilderness Areas in NY? We'd be limited to either car camping or limited hike-in sites since my friends have two young kids. Any thoughts on Putnam Pond? Lewey Lake? Woodford State Park? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Putnam Pond area is nice, but probably busy this time of year. If you go in from the Crane Pond trailhead you might find some solitude at Oxshue Pond. Beautiful Lake, nice lean to, great hang spots (cross in front of the lean to and follow the unblazed trail a short distance for some nice spots), and it's about a 2.5 mile hike. Heard coyotes here last time I camped here.

New York State wild forest areas and wilderness areas (not sure about other designations) you can camp "at large" anywhere 150' from road, trail or water.

You could try to get a site off of shelving rock road (near lake george). Sites are drive-up but require a (free) permit from the local ranger. You may be able to call ahead, I am not sure. The sites (as I remember) are more than adequately spaced. Plenty of hiking in the area.

There are also pull-off and short-walk sites along rt 73 between keene valley and I87. Not sure how many exactly.

Hope Falls road north of Northville also has some remote-feeling car camping with some nice hiking, waterfalls.

so many options in the adirondacks. check out http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/45415.html

NY State campgrounds vary but are generally pretty busy. Cherry Plain in Rensselaer Co is likely the quietest from what I have heard; very few sites. There are a few good, secluded sites at putnam pond and paradox lake from what I remember.
