I've since replaced my slap straps with a Dutch Clip/Tri-Glide combo. It had more to do with weight savings than anything.

i have never seen any damage to a tree that i hung from, I make sure to avoid loose bark and wrap it a few times to spread the weight over a bigger area. I know some people get mad about not using wide straps... sorry to them but I'm pretty sure i haven't damaged anything yet.
Depends on the type trees you use. Lots of folks have defiantly seen damage using rope.
A while back, I tried a bigger, hollow type nylon rope like some others were doing. Being hollow, it spreads & flattens out when weighted. It did fine for the most part, but on a couple trees I used (older Birch I think) it left it's marks. So I ditched it<G>.
We try to encourage people to use webbing on the tree for the reason that rope can sometimes leave visible damage, & we want to both be responsible & leave a positive impression were we hang our hammocks.
On some trees, even webbing could on a rare occasion leave a mark, but rope is much more likely to.
I too will something make and joy in it's making
I think that's more the point ... deep in the woods on a stealth camp ... not so much an issue but I can see in a campsite, or state park ... a few of us leaving visible marks (weither it's damage or not) can end up with a ban on hammocks. Trust me I've seen stranger things happen in NC State parks.
Just something to keep in mind.

Im heavy as hell and can say from experience that my slap straps stretch if I use them overnight. I love them for day hangs though. Very handy. I have noticed that the more I use them the less they stretch.
If i'm just gonna nap, etc, I think they are perfect. Even if you dont use em much, I would recommend getting a pair. They are pretty cheap.
i second this. i used slap straps in a permanent (well, for a whole summer at rafting outpost) setting and found a little stretching but not much. hammock never dragged to the ground or anything.
have i since moved on to something else? yes. there are more user friendly systems. but slap straps are hardly the plague.
I have the ENO single and got some of the straps made by "Rod Saver"
http://www.rodsaver.com/04_misc/DS.html They are used to dock a boat in a wet slip and will hold for my use.
They are 10' long, , with a cam buckle and have a loop already sewn on both ends. For$6.00 a pair, I am happy with them. Quick to deploy. When I get my Hennesy back I am going to put a set on it also.
What if I made Slap Straps from Paracord, Would that stretch as bad as the real thing or at all?
