    HH Super Shelter

Well i bit the bullet and ordered the Super Shelter for my HH
after looking at every option i think this is the best fit for my needs
also ...i plan on ordering a JRB quilt i'm thinking the Stealth or the Shenandoah this way i can go even colder with the SS and also use it as a lighter top quilt for summer
as i found out this summer the HR is alittle too much quilt for warm weather lol

any thoughts on adding a light quilt to the SS setup???
think it would be worth it ??

For temps above 55°, I've been getting away with my HR as UQ with a TQ made from a microfleece blanket and 1.9oz DWR nylon sewn on one side. Also has a sewn in footbox. The microfleece by itself let too much air through. Below 55° I switch to my JRB HR as a TQ and Snugfit UQ.

You will need to keep the quilt OUTSIDE of the SS, or most likely the SS undercover(UC) elastic tension will compress at least most of the loft, canceling most of the added warmth. Although I have heard of at least one person who was able to hang the UC loose enough to put a Pea Pod inside and keep most of the loft. But you will definitely need to experiment if you take that approach.

Generally, you can add all types of things down into the UC for a major warmth boost, but it is easier to pull off with less compressible items like fleece. A bit trickier with compressible items like 800 or 900 Fill power down, which is super compressible. And do a search on Garlington Insulator. Here is one to start with:

I used the HH Super shelter with the nest on out side of HHSS (so not to compress quilt) to about 9 degrees. I used this set up early in my hike with a 20 degree down bag. as it warmed up I sent bag home and used SS for temps above around 40 or 45 and the nest inside as quilt

Hennessy first experimented with down insulation in the super shelter. He found it compressed too easily to make the work properly. The OCF takes the compression of the undercover much better. That is to say, any down _quilt_ you put on it should go outside. Yes it is a reasonable approach once you know what your Super Shelter is capable of _for you_. Over the weekend I was comfortable at 30* F with a Slumberjack 15* synth sleeping bag opened as a quilt. I wore some very light weight polypro long johns.

All this is very personal in terms of performance. With a good JRB underquilt you should be good for some very chilly hanging when mixed with the Super Shelter. Adding parkas and other clothing to the SS inside the undercover has gotten some folks down in the -26 range when coupled with a good top quilt. Experiment and find your combinations.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Thanks for all the tips guys ...i never thought of fleece hmmm
I think i will end up getting the stealth like i said in the summer i can use it as my TQ

another things i was thinking of doing ...i got 1 of the all weather blankets
i'm going to cut it down the lets say alittle bigger than the pad that comes with the SS as my VB
i think with the SS the VB made out of a AWB and the stealth should keep me warm all winer long
and use my Hudson river as a TQ
