falling out of gathered end hammock

My son likes his hammock very tight. When it hangs under his bunk-bed he cannot get it tight as he likes, which is good. Currently he and I are hanging in a home office from wall anchors so we only have to cool one room while the girls are away. Last night he got his hammock REAL tight and was comfy, until he reached out to pet the dog, and it spun him onto the floor since there was virtually no sag in it. We laughed. About 1am, I looked over, and he was laying on the floor asleep on the dog pillow under his hammock. I asked him why, and he said he fell out AGAIN and was too tired to worry about getting back in. I rolled over and went back to sleep. Some time during the night he climbed back in cause he was snug in it when I got up for work. Tonight he will adjust his suspension and put some sag in it so it cannot spit him out so easily.

He must like it really tight - I've never fallen out of a hammock.

Is he sleeping at an angle and not parallel to the hammock? You need some sag to sleep at an angle which will give you a semi-flat lay and because you are "in" the fold of the hammock, you will not fall out.

I have a hard time getting out of mine sometimes, so it surprised me too. He does like to lay parallel, less of a diagonal. He will learn, I think. He is a smart kid, mostly. He got up on the tight edge too far, and leaned too far to pet the dog, and did not feel the point of no return coming I think. But then again, when he was 5 he was told to stay on his bed cause he was in trouble. He was on the top bunk. He tried to reach a book on the floor, fell off the bed, and broke his arm. He needs to start hanging 3" above the ground now that I think about it.
