    Making First UQ

I plan to make my first UQ. I have decided on synthetic insul for my first one and I am pretty sure of the insulation (Climashield XP 5oz roughly 30-40 degree temp). I am comfortable with my sewing skills, but I need design help. I want it full length. I will be using this with a couple hammocks, a Speer style gathered end and an ENO. It will be a hand me down for my wife once I make a down UQ later.

    My questions:
-What shape? Rectangular? KAQ shaped/darted?, patterned to me in the hammock?? I have read so many tutorials and thoughts that I have no idea which way to go.
-Suspension, I plan to use some bungee and may add some hanging tabs on my hammocks.
-DWR or not? I have 1.1oz DWR and 1.7oz uncoated ripstop on hand.

Any other thoughts or things I am missing are welcome.

I don't think you can go wrong if you follow the KAQ tutorial. It makes a nice shape that hugs the hammock/body well.

Following the KAQ tutorial also gives you channels along the sides and tabs at the corners. This lets you try any type of suspension you want to see what works best for you.

I'd use the 1.1 DWR, at least for the exposed side, to shed any splashed rain water. Lighter too.

I just completed my first UQ. After much debate I opted to go staight up rectangular. I'm glad I did. Having hung in it I don't see that a 'darted' quilt like the original adds much bang for the additional complexity. I'm sure it adds some. I'm just comfortable the payback wasnt there for me.

Good luck and keep us posted.

My first quilt was a kick *** quilt style with Climashield XP 5 oz. And actually it also has a DWR bottom, which I have found very useful! I'm glad I did the kick *** quilt pattern as it hugs my body really, really well.

Mine has the shock cord running the whole length of the underquilt, which adds weight but really is effective. And actually it has no other suspension--I just tie off the bungee cord around the knot at the end of my hammock and go!

FYI I have had mine down to 30 degrees with a good 20 degree bag and just my skivvies. I think it will go a bit lower. The climashield is nice stuff

    Good luck!

If you opt for rectangular (which is what I did for my full-length), the KAQ tutorial still is very useful, just don't cut the darts.

*EDIT* Strike that, I stumbled across a mirrored tutorial here on the forums. Thanks for renewing my interest tho'!

You don't mind pointing me in the direction of the KAQ tutorial, do ya? I have been to the link that most people have posted, but I guess they are all old, since every single one of them goes to the new KAQ page (arrowhead if I'm not mistaken) and that just tells me about the UQ's and which one I should buy, but not a thing on how to make my own. Maybe I am missing something...

Here's a link to Coffee's (nee HammockEngineer) instructions.

This is for a rectangular down quilt, but you could use the dimensions to size your synthetic and see how to do the edges. Skip all the parts about baffles and stuffing and just ??? sew through??? the Climashield to hold it in place. I have 2 of these, top and bottom, and I am very happy with them.

So, did you get it finished up since your last post or are you still working on it? I'd love to see some pics.
Let us know how it turned out. Thanks!
