I can find large rolls all day long, but I just want so small pieces to tinker with. Where do you get them? Get friendly with a local construction crew, dumpster diving?

I've got 10 ft pieces from construction crews before. It was leftover scrap... I think Dutch also sells it in small amounts.

Thanks Shug! You are the encyclopedia of outdoors.
+1 on Shug's recommendation, although I give getting friendly with a local construction crew a close second.

For small projects like ditty bags, food bags, sleeves to keep sooty stoves and cookware separate, etc the Post Office has several sizes of tyvek envelopes for free.
(insert pithy quote here)
They are free with the intent you are going to use them to ship... Please don't encourage pilfering.
+1 on not stealing the usps bags. Order something and keep the bag.
I think stop n shop reusable bags are tyvek too.
