Just wanted to update with a new solution that worked like a charm yesterday. My 70lb pitbull usually sleeps underneath me with a little pad and a throw cut from old sleeping bag that i'd put on top of him. He's always manages to get uncovered though and I'd wake up worried. Last night, I brought my much heavier (and thus mostly retired) Hennessy Explorer out instead of my Dutch Argon, and just brought him in the hammock with me! The poly fabric on the HH is wider, thicker, and doesn't stretch so we had no problems his claws and both slept like babies. Plus, I had my very own personal heater!
That was in Lake Wales Ridge State Forest in the Arbuckle Tract. That was Isabelle Creek camp site. We are meeting up there again in a couple of weeks. Come on out and join us. The thread is posted in the trip planning section. And yes, the dog is coming along again too!

For hiking the Colorado Trail I just used a biner to clip the leash to my whoopie sling. I had a pad for my pouch, but most nights he seemed very content to dig a hole on the leeward side of the tree I was hanging from.
Wonder how well these would work for ground dwelling dogs? Setup couldn't be simpler, price is low, waterproof.

Those using a pup tent or ground tarp and pad, do or have you ever had problems with snakes and the like? I would imagine snakes and critters would move right in with the open door on the pup tent. I'm sure I'm wrong, just curious. My dog is what's going to make or break my hammock conversion.
This is the pup tent I plan to by for my dog. I would think you dog will be pretty safe in this tent. It seals up completely for the most part. I'd like to hear other people perspective on this, but I doubt snakes or other animals would take the trouble to get in this tent. If they would on this tent, they would probably also try a tent you are in with your dog also.
Depending on dog size, you could also have dog in hammock with you.
Hope this helps...just my $.02

That looks like the Alcott Explorer Pup Tent. Less than $40 on Amazon. I was thinking of getting one for my cold wimp boxer. Glad to have found something not too expensive that gets good reviews and fits the dog.
This thread has my dog's Alcott pup tent modified to use a couple of cut/crossed arrow shafts and suspended from the hammock suspension in order to lighten the weight of the fiberglass poles. I like the tent because it gives bug protection and solid weather protection if deployed under the tarp when needed.

This has been a great thread to read, I love the ideas and dog pics!
I love your idea OlTrailDog, The tent with the dog and some smaller, lighter shafts, in my pack is where I think I will start.
We were out this weekend and the mosquitos were out in full force. My biggest concern is pests, I really don't want her full of bites when I get her home. That can't be fun for her.
Thanks for the info guys!
