I don't care if the down is from a duck or goose, gray or white. I go by what is the loft and these days I am looking for a water repellent down.

I am not eating it so I don't care if it is duck or goose ( both are tasty )

I don't care about the color of the down as I can't see it in the TQ or UQ

I want the highest rated loft I can get with out the price getting crazy as higher loft means less down to reach the desired temperature rating and a higher loft rating means less weight I have to pack in and out.

Some additional info here for for you:

    as well as here:

    http://www.undergroundquilts.com/faq/default.html

The important thing is has the down has been certified for it's fill power and content, a high quality duck down will out perform a poor quality goose down each and every time.

I prefer duck. Grey or white, it doesn't matter.
I've used both goose and duck. I own 2 quilts that have goose, and 5 that have duck.

The reason I prefer Duck? Price

    *Disclaimer: I work for EE*

As others mentioned, assuming they're the same fill power and down/feather ratio, the down will perform the same. Goose down is normally available in higher fp, but duck down is still available up to 800 (what we use) or sometimes 850. Duck down is cheaper because worldwide, folks eat a lot more ducks than geese. Also worth mentioning that because of labeling laws in the US, most duck down also contains a pretty good percentage of goose down as well, but anything other than 90% goose, 10% duck has to be labeled as duck down (so 80% goose and 20% duck would be sold as duck down, as I understand it).

I don't have water repellent down and I'm not sure it is worth the extra cost anyway. Duck or goose is inconsequential, just go with a reputable seller and go off loft rating.

I would like to ask a related question here.

Now that I understand what fp is and means, how do I use that knowledge to determine how much down I need for a given temperature rating? How do companies know how much down to put in stuff and how do they know what the temperature rating is?

My presumption is it's something like X-grams of Y-fp per square inch = Z-temperature rating.

The one possible exception I've heard to this is that supposed duck down is a more common allergen than goose down. I don't have a peer-reviewed source for that though, so take it with a HUGE grain of salt. Supposed it's because geese tend to eat a vegetarian diet, while ducks do not.
