    Snakes in hammocks?

Does anyone know of credible stories of snakes entering hammocks?

My daughter asked me whether snakes coming along the lines to enter hammocks was a problem. She had heard somewhere that putting discs along the lines between the trees and the hammock would stop snakes. It has never even occurred to me to worry about snakes in my hammock, and I have never heard anyone else talk about this. I would guess that the odds are less that a snake would get in a hammock than any ground dweller sleep arrangement, but I suppose there are areas where this is not true.

Snakes have a hard time climbing a string...

However, if you are really worried about it, get a Hennessey. It is fully enclosed and the bottom entry closes automatically with velcro after you get inside. No way for a string-climbing-snake to enter.

I get asked about snakes getting in my hammock a lot from people who don't camp. I've never seen one try, raccoons on the other hand are scary little creatures. Feeling you up from below with those little paws. /shudders at the thought

alright, if that ever happened to me, that would diffinitly scare the daylights out of me
    but I'm still laughing....

about snakes... I camp where there's lots of them, the only thing I've ever worried about is having one take up residence on the ground under me as I sleep. Never had it actually happen but I've "heard" of other's finding a snake under them (on the ground) when they got up. I shine my flashlight on the ground before I put my feet out.

    Groped by a coon...

I worry more about what might have taken up residence in my mocassins.

In ten years of using a hammock doing long distance backpacking (maybe an average of two months on the trail per year), never had a snake inside my hammock. Have had one squirrel (I think, may have been a small racoon) get on top of my tarp in 2004. Biggest problem is all the bugs that can get in while the net is open while getting into the hammock.

Once I used a fog of bug spray under the tarp to create a time-out for skeeters, so I could get inside. It worked well!

...wonder if anyone has made a no-seeum skirt and doors for their tarp?

BTW, if you want to keep snakes away, use Snake-Away, which is naphthalene (moth balls).

I've had squirrels run across my ridgeline and raccoons humping my tarp tie-outs, but I've never had a snake issue.

I've had a skunk linger under my hammock for a little TOO long.

I've also had bats fly under my hammock, but they rarely make contact, with their advanced radar sensors.
