    Temp. rating

I just finished making an under quilt. It has 3" of loft in the center ( sholders to butt) 800 fill down, it the tappers to 2 " at the head and feet. With a Thurmarest Pro lite 3 pad inside the hammock what would be the lowest temp I could expect to stay comfotable.

I would guess a wide range of 15º to 0º ..... maybe better depending on your sleeping temp ... hot or cold natured sleeper. Especially with that pad.

I was only hopping for 20 used 12 oz of down. Total for the quilt is 23 oz.

Quilt alone should get you to 20º

    Pictures? did you follow instructions?

I'm on the verge of breaking down and making one myself. although I don't have a sewing machine and will be hand stitching my quilt... Also how much did it cost you to make, what materials did you use for the shell?

I was considering doing the same thing but I decided against sewing by hand because that actually takes a lot more skill than using a machine to do it well.

I'd love to see some pictures of your final product when you get finished.

My limiting factor is money. I considered picking up one of those hand held machines (Looks like a stapler) at walmart for $10 to do the edges but then didn't have the money when I finally found one...

Thread hijack alert! (well, sort of)

Under quilt with 3" sewn thru baffles (I'm going to use my WM MityLite slid over the end of the hammock). Would that be good 'till 30F? What if I add a small piece of CCF (torso only)?

Assume, LJs, socks, down top quilt rated at 25F, high loft balaclava, etc.

One thing to watch if you are planning to use a pad with your underquilt...If it's a fairly rigid pad it can cause gaps in your underquilt allowing cold drafts in unless you are just using a short pad for the feet. I was worried my 3-season Yeti might not be warm enough into the low 20's without a full length pad. Using a Thermarest Ridgerest pad I found that it let it cold drafts in because the pad wasn't flexible enough to get a good seal with the underquilt where they overlap. I went back to a short pad for my feet and found my Yeti to be plenty warm by itself in the torso area down to the 20's.

I was going to use my GC NightLight Torso pad under my shoulders/butt. It is a narrow pad (19"x30"). I've never used anything under my feet and been ok but my quilt has a thick footbox on it.
