Been meaning to get back up to this area on the Gunflint Trail in Northern Minnesota. Was up there in Winter 15 or so years ago with Hickery. Took the Caribou Rock Trail to the Border Route Trail. The Caribou Rock Trail is a tough little trail for sure. One of the most challenging that I have done in Minnesota for sure. Caught me by surprise. It is beautiful and rugged and has a wonderful pay-off.
Takes about 5 to 6 hours to drive up there from my house and even though I left early, by the time one stops for gas and snacks and picking up the BWCA Permit and finding the traihead the day is late already. So....by the time I got to the border Route Trail I was tired and the day dusk was looming. Had to stealth camp off the trail but that is within regulations if you are well off trail and do low impact camping. No fire. Perfect for me and my hammock. Did not want to night hike with those rocks and cliffs.
Whoooooooo Buddy.

I had a wonderful hike back down to Moss Lake Camp in the rain and thunder. Terrific hammock view and spot for the night. Had a good dinner and some quality hammock time. Windy windy night and the Hammockgear cuben fiber tarp did its job.
It is a long drive up there but truly worth it.
Whoooooo Buddy)))))
