Why not use buttons to attach an under quilt?

With all the adjusting and sliding and fooling around with the position of my under quilt I am considering making button holes along the "gunwale" edge of my hammock on each side with corresponding buttons on the under quilt. It would still have a shock cord on each end to snug it but stay in place due to it being buttoned to the hammock. If there is just a little extra fabric between buttons it should not pull too tight or gap.

Is there a reason this isn't done?

I have thought about this, except using toggles like on the XLC bugnet. I like fiddling with adjusting my underquilt too much to have it stationary. But I do think it would work well for an underquilt protector and plan to make one soon. my plan is to sew little loops of thin grosgrain along the "gunwales" as you call them (i like that term being applied to hammocks) and corresponding oblong toggles on the uqp.

Yes, I too thought about toggles. Also thought about putting the buttons on the hammock instead so that possibly multiple layers of under quilt could be attached at the same time by slipping the button through the holes on each layer. I am no master seamstress so I may get some assistance but either way plan to give it a shot soon.

Dream Hammocks(dreamhammocks.com) in cooperation with Underground Quilts(undergroundquilts.com) were one of the first to use hooks to allow the underquilt to be securely attached where you want it. Check them out.

Did it in 2003 with my first poncho liner underquilt. It is a solution but I didn't like the way I had it set up. Hooks and ladders works better for me.

I've been messing around with buttons for a while. I use them instead of snaps and velcro due to noise and failure with time. I have them on my camping hammock (basically as you described) but I am tinkering with the best approach still. I have a couple of prototypes. So far they all work but are not as simple as I would like. I will be (hopefully soon) applying it on my new rig at home in a couple of different ways to test it more.

You may run into some compression of the insulation once you lay on the hammock if you don't have some amount of shock cord as part of the suspension.

Maybe a button-and-shock-cord-loop would be the answer...Good luck all!

Wouldn't attaching the UQ to the hammock in such a way create limitations for adjustment? I thought that was why people attach the UQ to a RL with shock cord instead.

If you pull the primary UQ suspension up tight enough, you limit slippage problems, at least that's been my limited experience.
