    eye-catching camo

I notice that there is a lot of eye-catching camo around… it kind of defeats the purpose. The pattern repeats in a way that it stands out and looks very un-natural. It kind of looks like one of those magic eye things. Maybe if you cross you eyes, you can see a picture of a person laying in a hammock!

Here is an example that I found on the internet.

I wonder why they don't have the pattern have less repeat in it? I guess because it is printed with a roller? Is there any camo ripstop around that doesn't have this effect?

i think the multi cam and some of the digicam materials are better about not having such repeating patterns. i also dont think many of the manufacturers expect the fabrics to be used on such a large object as a tarp. another thing about camo it works so much better when not in the open.

Multicam repeats about every 41 inches or so. But it doesn't look bad. A good example is the one made by Paul over at UnderGroundQuilts. This is probably the largest tarp I have ever seen in camo and while you can see a repeating pattern it doesn't look bad.

The human eye is also very acute at picking out unnatural forms...strait lines are not natural in nature very often so they tend to also make things stand out.

I think the same tarp in the picture would be hidden if not out in the open.

What I notice about the pictured tarp is that it has far less contrast than the woods behind it - dark areas aren't dark enough. Some camo fabrics are much better in that regard.

This is why I prefer Coyote brown for my environment. It blends well to the main background color. It's does well year round. If you really want to "disappear " then you need to work on brushing in your setup.

barber mike… that is kind of the way I'm leaning. I am not too worried about "disappearing", I just don't want to "stand out". I like for my setup to have an organic look to it… blending in and looking like it is part of the environment rather than looking foreign. I'm not really trying to hide though.

Coyote brown, dark olive, and olive drab seem to all be good choices in solid colors. Still pondering.

I want to say that I'm not trying to disparage anybody's choice of color or fabric, or their beloved tarp. To each his own!

This is what Dutch's camo looks like in the wild. The camo in your first post looks like it might be that pattern. It's very similar anyway.

The camo pattern repeats because the manufacturing process involves patterned rollers to transfer the ink or pigment onto the fabric, and the repeat length is dictated by the circumference of that roller. Larger rollers require larger machines and investment than smaller ones do.

^ this, plus almost every camo pattern is designed for use in clothing, not large surfaces like a tarp. There is no mass market need for a pattern that repeats less.
