I posted the question below on another thread and received no response. Perhaps this is the place for my question.
I recently bought the Warbonnet Traveler sold on the HF "gear for sale" thread for my 17 year old son. I haven't had time to fine tune the insulation approach yet. There may be an UQ in the future. But, I don't want to rush that purchase until I can shop around a bit. For the short term, I have some Thermarest pads and a CCF RidgeRest pad that I can use. We are planning to participate in the Arizona Canyon Creek "hangout" on November 21-22, which might present temperatures around 20 degrees, or slightly lower.
Here is the question...
I tried setting up the new WB Traveler with a Thermarest Camp Rest (30"x76"x2.5"). It just seemed too big and bulky in every way. I let out some air, and still no help. I then tried a 20"x72" CCF RidgeRest; the fit was very much better. The CCF pad just seemed to conform to the Traveler in a better way. I slept in it last night in the backyard, and it did very well between 40-45 degrees. But, I am concerned that below 20 degrees, the RidgeRest won't cut it. Should I add a second CCF pad? Or, is there another approach I should be thinking of?
The sleeping bag I used for my backyard test was a NF 30 degree down bag. I will be putting my son in a NF -15 degree bag used as an over quilt or zipped up within a NF Gore Tex bivy sack for the upcoming trip. Maybe that will be enough.
Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
