A while back I tried the same but with Ripstop nylon. My Mr. wood was a cabinet door. Looks like you had more luck than I did.
I hemmed the long sides folded the ends like you. It did not work for me. I think the door was too narrow and too long.
My idea was to burn holes in the fabric (Hennessy style) when I got it right but I never did.

Could be I have clone myself and try again someday

Does make it very asymmetrical tho'. Might put it back to a symmetric gather, thought I'd settled as a lefty, but it turns out I might be a ambi-layer Hansel!

    Here's a shorter version, for the levity-averse

Well done, willing volunteers are hard to come by, Mr.Wood is a good idea, you might even be able to give him some contours with a couple of pillows?
    Good luck,

    Hmm, there's a thought.
Or I could just wait 'til I'm back at the fire station and use Rescue Randy!

Rescue Randy looks like he would excel at the task.

Its overkill for one or two hammocks but when I tried the Mr. wood concept I got another idea.
Make a kind of jig like a hammock upside down. Gravity would help to form the fabric and hold it in place while the ends are gathered.

What is the status of this hammock or more precise the build concept with Mr. wood?
I am tempted to give it a try (again) but the question is if it’s worth to get the materials for “mr. wood”.

I am using that hammock at work, I tend to stay with the lefty lay there. My home tablecloth is gathered symmetrically, I tend to swing both ways there!
It's really only marginal gains, just an inch or so here and there, but it definitely is noticeable.

I probably wouldn't go out and buy wood to make the thing, but the old skirting board was ready to hand in the shed. Might be nice to try it with a real human.
