Any advice on how to avoid this?
I just upgraded my hammock to amsteel & cinch buckles.
Here's what mine look like:

Splicing the Amsteel through the cinch buckles with several wraps does help somewhat to keep the continuous loop more centered on the buckle.

Otherwise, I'd just double check them to make sure they're sitting squarely on the webbing. After you put some weight on the suspension, they do tighten up and tend to stay in place a little better.
I suggest adding a third wrap on the larks head to completely fill the space to prevent the amsteel from being able to shift slightly to one side like this....

....or making the larks head with the thicker spliced portion of the continuous loop to better fill the space or use the wrap and splice method shown by Papa....and as always, check your set up every time before getting in.
Timely reminder sir, I am one who did not check every time and over the course of several nights the buckle twisted enough that my strap ripped on a long diagonal, and my butt hit the floor. Take this seriously my friends.
If you prepare for failure you will probably succeed.
I connect mine with a double or triple larks head. This keep the force centered, and the extra wraps mitigate it sliding to one end.

I think either would work, but wrapping the Amsteel provides more stability to the buckle and is easier to adjust when the buckle is slightly off center.
Doesn't matter if you wrap it, still happens. Will happen less, but still happens.
I won't use these with the kids anymore. We've cut straps or had drops.
The best solution i've found is a combination of 5-6 wtaps and strap keepers/savers. After the strap passes through the buckle, keeping the strap layered on top of itself helps.
I have prototyped some twist stoppers, plugs for inside the cinch buckle and they are also working. Has to be pretty stiff material but gives enough to pop into place.

I have never had mine slip. Hundreds and hundreds of nights. In fact, the triple larks head is so tight on my buckles now, I cant slide it to the side even if I wanted too.
