Before I place an order with Brian of OES

    Greetings,

I just have a few questions before I place my order for a SpinnUL MacCat. Brian had suggested I order the Ultra, which weights 12.2 oz.

What Brian hasn't had time to answer for me is - is this a 12' X 12' size? Is this the model that I can create doors for winter camping?

I don't typically camp with a group. I envision using this for myself - no other people or pets to cover.

Should I go for this or would a 10' X 10' tarp be sufficient?

Thanks to everyone who has field tested the MacCat.

I was able to inspect two Ultras this weekend... they are 12 feet long and have doors. The quality is amazing. Very nice!

    I want one!

OK, then I should go with the 12' instead of a 10' tarp?

Three... I remember remarking to John that he needed three hiking sticks so he could have one in each tie.

I have both, the Deluxe and Ultra. They both are 104" or 8.6 ft. at the widest point. The Ultra is 144" long or 12 ft. The Deluxe is 130" long, so you gain 14 inches with the Ultra.
Neither of these come with doors, although that may be something Brian can do as a special order.
I feel better with the Ultra, just because it provides a little more protection in the rain. In reality, I've never been wet under either one, but peace of mind is worth a dollar or two.

I don't see the need for an Ultra unless you have a "tall folks" hammock like a Hennessy Explorer. A Macat Standard is probably enough to keep 99% of rainstorms off of your UQ, the Deluxe is all anybody needs for 3-seasons. I don't believe the Ultra is any wider, so side-blown rain will get you just the same if you don't set up correctly. I've found trees I could set my hammock up between that were almost TOO CLOSE to stretch my Deluxe between.

yep, 3 per side ... if I only had an extra arm

I actually thought I had the Deluxe, but it turns out I have an Ultra

It covers great, but I'd actually like the sides to be longer, but I'm 6', so hanging so the sides are close to the ground makes it a bit short for me.

Mine also has two extra tie outs half way up that allow me to really lock it down and even close the ends in heavy wind and rain. Also allows some pretty funky configurations for 'porch mode' depending on where I put my poles.

Either way, you'll be happy with an OES tarp. TOP quality.

    Before I order from OES

Thanks, everyone for sharing the benefit of your field experience.

    I have two questions:

    1. MacEntyre, are you saying I could order the Ultra and be able to set it up so I have "doors" or should I ask Brian to make doors when I place the order?

2.Take-a-knee, since I'm under 5 feet tall, if I order the Standard, would I have enough tarp to set up "doors" or should I have doors made?

I'm mostly trying to deal with shifting winds. No matter how I set up my silnylon 8 X 10 tarp, eventually precip finds its way in.

You folks are great. I'm glad I found my way to this website.
