OES door mods and the Grizz removeable beaks

Tarp door mods conversation on the forum recently has piqued my interest again in getting my wife ZQ to offer my door mod for OES tarps. It seems there may be interest enough for her to engineer patterns for each size. Is this what I'm hearing? We've kicked it around before but felt it may not appeal to enough people to make it worth the effort. I personally think it provides another option that would allow one to stay with a smaller tarp size yet get maximum coverage out of it for a weight penalty close to a large tarp without door capability.

On another note, I've contacted Grizz about making his removeable beak concept as well. It would be great to gage the interest either of these might have before we work in that direction too far. Send some comments my way....thanks for any input/suggestions/wishes, etc.

If ZQ made something removable I would be interested. It would get that off my thing todo list. I would be sceptical of the removable beak b/c it would have a higher weight penalty. However it would be better b/c it would cover a number of different models of tarps. Otherwise you would have to have many different patterns.

I like the idea of removeable doors, especially on the OES Spinn tarps. I have built one of Grizz's Beaks and finds that it works well, however, I would say that it requires more material/weight to cover than would fitted attachable doors.

I would also be interested in a design that doesn't use a zipper. It seems that a lighter solution could be devised.

I think the real question for me would come down to how the doors worked with the Spinn fabric and the cost. The beauty of Grizz's beaks is that you can make one of them for under $10 in materials and not weaken the integrity of the Spinn tarp.

    Thanks,

    DG

Agreed. That will always be the case, but for a specific tarp I think a revision of the beak design is possible that would limit the overlap between beak and tarp to maybe 6 inches. Might need a couple of grip clips also, but once attached it could stay attached.

just another project for the queue...

2Q's, You can put me on a list for doors on an OES Ultra in SpinnUL. The doors need not be removeable...in fact, I would prefer they not be removeable. Need not necessarily be in SpinnUL, either. You may remember my HH with doors (you can see them in my gallery)...that's the kind of doors I think is best. I do want them to allow a good tight pitch on both the doors and the tarp, and the cat cut adds an element of complexity that needs the skills of someone like you (or ZQ!).

BTW, Just read in another thread that Brian at OES is planning to work on doors for his tarps. Therefore, the mod biz would be limited to existing tarps and then only if Brian doesn't offer that service also.

Good point. Just saw that today too. Of course it still may be worthwhile for you to offer the mod though if it's not too much of a pain to produce. You know there are plenty of MacCat's out in the field and probably a fair number of folks that would like to add doors to save a little cash from purchasing a separate tarp.
