Putting together a timeline would be a huge undertaking and would proly require it's own site; it would definitely have to be a group collaboration. That's a big request...

Still, credit is generally given to the people that still use them today in central and south America. I've got a copy of a book that features Mr. Bogan and contains a lot of the hammock history, but I can't remember the name. I'll look tonight at home.

Modern designs is where it would get really confusing.

SlowBro didn't bring Whoopie Slings to the forum. He made a great layperson's tutorial for making them, but ZA206 gets credit for first showing a constrictor. He used the very similar UCR. Immediately following his post there was a flurry of 'back and forth' developments with both UCR's and Whoopies by several members (TeeDee, Frawg, Acercanto, Nacra, etc), but it was ZA206's idea that generated the whole thing.

    With all due respect...

    1) Some cat invents hammock to sleep off the ground.
    2) Another thinks up the tarp to keep dry.
    3) Third throws on a net to keep the bugs away.

    And honorable mention:
    4) One more figures out that an underquilt will keep his hind end warm.

Interesting thing about constrictors...we were using constrictors back in the 70's on hollow braid polypro (ski rope) to tie down dirt bikes.

I think I'd question this- knotting and netting, especially in tropical biozone probably pre-dated cloth production.
Maybe if you cross a fishing net with a baby carry sling?

Could use the haul rope to tie the net between trees, and then sleep with the fishes...

Sgt. Rock on his site (maybe still there, maybe still does?) used to give awards for innovation.
I wan't to know who exactly came up with the 2/3's UQ--that is up there with a moon launch.

It might be easier to catalog the contributions of the stones comprising an avalanche.
