    fid length 3mm Amsteel 12?

I'm entranced with making eye splices and whoopie slings with this stuff (have faked a fid's function using an assortment of sewing tools) but the directions on Samson's site give lengths in terms of the fid for that size rope. And I'm pretty sure my guess about the fid length is overly generous.

I tried to search for "fid" but that's a word that's too short to be searched on.

So, help me out here - how long is a fid for 3mm (1/8") Amsteel blue 12 strand rope?

Thanks for helping keep my living room well supplied with little scraps of technical sailing line!

A fid length is 21 x rope diameter, so that's 2.625 inches for 1/8". But you better do the math...not my strength.

IIRC, the 'fid' as a relative measurement is defined as 21 or 22 times the diameter of the line. For your Amsteel that would be 63-66mm, or about 2.75" .

    Happy splicing!

    Whoo! You folks are quick!

My splice buries were overly generous.

Time to decorate more carpet with rope-bits!
