I have had my Explorer deluxe and and poncho down below zero a number of times this fall.. no worries really.

We - (my son and I) - slip a space blanket in the middle between layers - we both also sleep in - 25 down sleeping bags. Im considering sewing them up - with a layer of insulation in the middle - I'm just not sure what to use yet.

Awesome pics! Thanks for sharing!! I like how the PLUQ is so versatile and makes UQ production pretty easy.

Anyway, has anyone tried one of these out?
By itself, what kind of temperature rating would you give it?
I tried it by itself at ~32F....and I got cold...I think the mid-40's is probably a good rating by itself

x2 on the mid-40's unless you augment the insulation... When making my version of this UQ, I didn't line up the edges, but offset them a little, so the lower part leaves a small air gap between the layers. This should make it a bit warmer...

so with a 15* bag, how low could you take a PLUQ? what about if you add a cheap pad or space blanket?

A pad would definitely help. A space blanket adds about 5-degrees in my limited experience.

Many people use Pads and go below 30 without an UQ.

I'll let somebody with more cold weather experience than I answer that one...

This thread may shed some light on the subject:
http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=22853 At least from a pad perspective...

I've never hung lower than the low 30's...
