Lego makes a tremendously durable product. I have drilled out the center of Lego Heads for use as beads. There are even some which glow in the dark.

I use glow in the dark beads.
I use split rings, but not the key chain ones. They are small ones, about the size of the ones on a Swiss Army knife. I got them in the fishing section, under five bucks for 100, of maybe it was 250 (I actually got them for another reason but had a lot left.). Good news is they can go on after it is already spliced.
Zing-it. Somebody has a video posted on how to tie this. I tried to find it for you but didn't have any luck. Maybe someone else remembers who posted it and can link to it?
