Video: Carvers Gap (Roan Mtn) to 19E

A couple weekends ago a few of us (Firebird, Paddlemule, Chappy23 & I) backpacked on the A.T. near Roan Mountain.
We caught a shuttle at Mountain Harbor up to Carvers gap & hiked the ~14 miles back to the car along the A.T.

This route is known for its views along the balds - Round, Jane, Grassy Ridge, Little Hump & Hump - and it famous red barn shelter.
And while the overall trail drops 3,000 ft, don't think this will be a walk in the park (especially if you aren't in shape) - there is a lot of uphill climbs along the way.

I kid a bit on the video about the two in-shape hikers & the other two of us.
Always a good wake up call to get in shape after getting your butt kicked climbing those hills

The weather was good - which at Roan means it wasn't horrible. We had wind, then wind & rain... made for an early night to bed. But fortunately no rain while we hiked so I'll take it.

We finished off the trip at Bob's Dairyland, where we enjoyed some food & saw a few more southbound thru-hikers.

Video is a little longer than usual but included a parade of hammocks in this one.
    Enjoy.

Oh and the wind noise lasts a couple minutes then gets better.. I'm working on something to help with that for future trips.

Nothing like the winds up on the balds. Good report. Thanks for taking us along.

Definitely a classic hike in NC.. don't expect solitude, but the payoff makes it worth it.

Thanks for sharing TallPaul. I've had plans to hike Roan but each time this year there have been unexpected conflicts. Looks to be a great place even in fall. Appreciate your demonstration of rolling your hammock before pulling your snake skins over it. Looks like a good technique. Going to have to try it. Thanks.

I am so jealous of what you all have down south of the border in terms of trails. Where i live, its a 4 hour drive to the mountains to trails. It's spectacular once you get there but it's getting there that's the issue. In and around our city we have lots of country side but no defined trails unless its a small recreation area . It's a weekend away just to go hiking around here unless its just a day hike. Thanks for the video TallPaul. Always nice to see what others have available
    to them.
