    do i need an underquilt

    let me begin by saying i'm new to hammocking( just recieved a HH exped no net at a really good price), i've accumulated some hammocking gear and want to go hammocking with the cub scouts next spring/summer. My question is do i need an underquilt. what temps?

    Underquilts are nice for keeping warm, but not absolutely essential. You can use pads and stay quite warm.

    Underquilts are popular because they are more breathable than pads (less condensation) and because they are generally less 'fuss'. But, plenty of us started out by using pads, and were warm while doing it.

    Check out the SPE. It is helpful for 'staying on top' of pads.

    You need insulation under you any time you go below about 75 or so, depending on the individual person. That could be a 300 dollar underquilt or a 10 dollar foam pad from walmart, but you will want something.
