True, the ball is a toggle, but it's big and heavy. I made some toggles this past weekend from an old arrow and sanded them pretty well. I don't think they would make holes unless you were pretty rough with the stuff sack. You could always use light wooden dowels or piece of narrow, rigid plastic as an alternative. As long as it's big enough not to pull back through the shock cord but small enough to be light and non-bulky, I think it would probably work great.
