    sewing machine question.........

I have a question, I was going to move /rearrange the storage room I use for making gear etc, but the wall where I was going to put the sewing machine doesnt have an outlet---------will it hurt the machine if I use an extension cord instead of plugging it into a wall outlet?
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

My current temp setup has the same problem and I have been using an extension cord with out any problem. The current draw on a consumer grade machine is very low so a standard 12ga extension cord should be fine.

The machine will be fine. Long term use of extension cords is generally discouraged because of potential fire hazard. Just keep it (i.e. the extension cord) uncluttered and inspect it periodically to be sure it hasn't gotten any hot spots from damage, usually from flexing where the wire meets the hard parts at either end.

The primary fire hazard is from using too small of a cord. 12 guage is the same as the wires in the walls, it'll be fine. Just inspect as already noted.

Typical wall wiring is 14 AWG for 15A circuits. 12 GA is used for 20A circuits.

A 12 GA extension cord is overkill, but probably wisely so; the 15A breaker should pop before the cord could overheat if there's any problem with the sewing machine.

IME, the bigger danger comes from using cord that you "know" is the right size but has damage that you haven't noticed. Defective merchandise is a real concern. Here's some worthwhile reading.

Use the overkill approach... get an air conditioner extension cord!

If you get a flat one, it will work better where you have to run it under a rug.

It's just a storage room? Surface wire it, put in an outlet where you need it, and be done with it.
