Tautline or prussik for hammock suspension?

I like the Beckett hitch for its simplicity, but it's not adjustable. Can I use a tautline hitch (slippery) to connect my long tree strap to the continuous loop at the hammock? Alternatively, can I use a prussik on the strap (and attach the prussik to the cl using a beckett hitch or biner)?

on the former, yes, you can. most would recommend several hitches.

about the prussic. in theory you probably could but i'm having a hard time envisioning it with functionality, at least in my head. but; i'm setting at a computer while i wait on some documents to finish preparation.

If you enjoy the tautline go for it. I recommend trying at home before going out in the woods. My concern wouldn't be that it holds you but that it holds you all night. Most likely it would let you down slowly if it fails.

Lot of folks have asked before....I have yet to see or hear from anyone that has made it work well. Most find that neither knot work very well as a suspension system. There are however many good suspensions that have been tested and proven to work for hammocks by thousands. You will not find any of us vendors offering a knot based suspension, but all of us offer whoopie slings, cinch buckles, ring buckles, and on and on.

Tautline or prussik for hammock suspension?

Look up phantom grappler on YouTube and check out his phantom grappler suspension and other ideas. He's gotten the prussik to work well. I think you'll be able to borrow enough stuff off of his set up to work out something like you want.

It was actually a vendor (AntiGravityGear) that popularized the becket hitch. And the speed hooks everyone is eagerly awaiting from dutch is a hardware/knot suspension. Both wildly popular. Not that vendor offerings are any determining factor on whether a suspension is good or not.

Can't really picture how you want to use the prussik, but a tautline will definitely slip after a little while... I have used them before for tightening up tarps and once they get some weight on them and the rope gets wet, they go! Usually a little slip-stop-slip-stop-ground action. The way I've made them hold is to adjust to length then put a small stick in a clove hitch behind the knot so the hitch will slip up against it. Then when it's time to pull it apart you just break the stick and the clove comes right loose... You should use something else but it can work like that if you needed it too...

trucker's hitch is better than tautline for heavy load/high tension.

Mophead's right. See Phantom Grappler's video.

Maybe Phantom Grappler will chime in with some other tips. Good luck!

I can't imagine tying these knots/hitches in the webbing. And I have a lot of trouble envisioning a Prusic sliding along a length of webbing. Does this actually work?

Thanks for your kind words mophead and Pipsissewa. As shown in video 5 wrap prusik holds tree strap and does not slip if hand tightened before hanging. And yes it can be jammy and hard to loosen after a hang. It slipped when I tried it with Kevlar straps--then a recent post by octagone has solved problem of prusik slip on Kevlar.
Convenience: Dutch clip, Kevlar, AmSteel, slip knots, loop alien.
In his video octagone uses a slip knot of AmSteel on Kevlar strap. And it holds all by itself and is a quick easy release. Octagone' slip knot encircles the strap. I call it the octagone hitch.
So I think keep the prusik, either 5wrap three wrap or even one wrap(larks head) and back this up with a slip knot in Kevlar just below your prusik of choice. This slip knot would not encircle AmSteel-it would just be a simple slip knot with Kevlar strap. After hand tightening both knots, slide the prusik or larks head down to collide with slip knot.
I will keep prusik or larks head always tied in AmSteel around strap. That part is semi permanent-you only tie it one time. And small parts of your suspension are less likely to be lost or misplaced. The only knot that is tied and untied is a slip knot that can be tied in the dark and is quick release in Kevlar.
Toddhunter, if you weren't crazy before, maybe this will help
