    Mount Elden Sprint, Arizona

The snow on the mountain was beckoning, so I decided to do a sprint to the snow. A total of about four miles and 4,000 ft of elevation change (2,000 up/down) in 1 hour and 48 minutes--well, maybe not a sprint; more like a trot. Besides the amazing views, the best part was relaxing in my hammock near the top.

Running down the trail was treacherous (warning: ankle killer), and my quads are absolutely pounding!

My spacious 18L pack carrying 3L of water, sleeping bag, hammock (Grand Trunk Nano 7), extra thermal top and bottom, extra wool socks, snacks, and my emergency radio.

Very cool. I was wondering how deep the snow was up there.

I live on the East side of town and it looks like most of the weekend snow on Elden has all but melted off

WhooHoo, good old Mt.Elden! A great Mtn, on it's own merits( I would love to have it here in MS!), but a mere foot hill compared to it's very close next door neighbor, Mt.Humphry(sp?) and the rest of the San Francisco Peaks. I love Flagstaff!

I wonder why I ever left Flagstaff after I graduated from Northern Arizona. I kick myself daily!

Did you hike to the tower at the top?

Me? No, I never went to the top of Elden during my 2 years in Flagstaff, or any other time. Don't know why though, it was right there very handy.

I've been to the top, yes, but not on this sprint hike. I climbed to the saddle and then headed back home (I promised my wife I would be back at a certain time).
