Hi Mark! I can't speak for tenters but based on the sign up sheet she won't be the only wife in the group Tell her the tent is welcome (as long as she's well insulated) and many of the hammocks will look like big tents anyway with the large winter tarps over them.

I took a day off of work and will be meeting y'all on the mountain at noon on Friday. I'll be the unmistakable this year. Dimjim got me all tricked out this Christmas with a purple DIY hammock and matching tarp. They go well with last years assorted "jazzberry" pink merino wool items.

Lots of folks make cozies from reflectix. Cut to suit whatever shape you need. Keeping water in a cooler...cooler wrapped in a blanket....in your car. All good ways.

Everyone is welcome, even if they be ground dwellers!

FYI for those going to Thomas Knob SH, there APPEAR to be 2 privys, there are not, one is nearly demolished, the other is closest to the shelter.
Water is behind the shelter in a fenced in area, it was well flowing last time I was there 8 years ago.
I remember there being minimal hanging sites in the area directly close to the shelter. BUT I saw plenty at Rhododendron Gap, just FYI.
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.

I have a big roll of reflectix that I'll bring with me, so people can fashion their own cozies (byo duct tape), or make under-butt pads as needed. No charge. I have a "cozy" that fits a 5 gal. spring water bottle. I hope it will be cold enough that it's needed.

Thanks! (8 years is too long.)

@MarkThompson: I have been to lots of hangs, and there has usually been a tent or two. Nobody will say a thing about it. Your wife's welcome. My hammock sock is also a tent - i.e. it reaches to the ground, and actually has a small "footprint". That's where my dog sleeps (I hope).

Hey Doc! Good to hear from you. (Note: if you're up for some local winter stuff, we're out about twice a month. Send a pm. We'd be right honored to have you.)

This visit will not disappoint. Mother Nature is going to "cooperate."

Thanks for the reflectix clinic WV. It does appear we'll need it. Forecast is keeping it non-liquid.
