Question how hammock gear is advertised..

I am finding that down quilts (under and top) are advertised to sell at a certain length and width, in which the finished products are as much as 6 inches smaller in length and width. Reason, the manufacturer says, is because the stuffing of the down draws in the original measurement of the fabric cut. More than one Cottage Industry has told me this. Should I expect this to be the normal expected way of advertising or should I feel a bit taken?

i have a lot of quilts from various vendors. i don't feel taken in the slightest.

perhaps its my upbringing; my father was a traveler..

no; you shouldn't feel taken. how else should it be measured?

I'm not sure why you should feel taken. Do you feel that there is false advertising going on? Is there some kind of global conspiracy among cottage vendors to screw customers out of up to six inches in width or length?

I believe the OP is wondering why quilts aren't advertised at their post-fill lengths.

I would think that because the post fill length may vary from quilt to quilt (even quilts with the same amount of fill), the only way to accurately list a standard measurement would be pre-fill dimensions.

Most of the quilt makers seem to list a suggested height range that their various lengths should be good up to, i.e "regular length should be good for people up to 6 feet tall", etc. - perhaps that's a better way to consider whether a quilt is the right length for one's needs?

Well, if I buy a car that's advertised as a certain model year, then I expect that year and not another.

If I buy a 60" long quilt, then I am in the right to think I'm buying a FINISHED 60" quilt, not one that ends up 55". No conspiracies suspected here. Why so snarky? The OP has a legitimate question, IMO.

They are designed to be usable. If you are a standard size standard people should fit them, if you are longer than standard then you probably need along one to fit. I would feel ripped off if I bought a standard size, was on the short side, but it didn't fit. But that doesn't seen to happen as these vendors seem fairly successful selling them. Sizes seem fairly comparable between vendors. If I thought I was on the border between sizes, I would definitely contact the vendor. It is not like you would be the first person to ask.

This is a standard way of measuring it's like a 1/4 pound hamburger is a pre cooked measurement. Besides if someone has the vender to put some over stuffed down in it, are they suppose to account for that before they start then they would have so many different measurements it would be impossible to keep up with.

I'm more shocked that people are shocked by the snarky comment. Some things seem fairly consistent if you hang out here for a little while.

To the OP, I have an HG quilt set and to be honest I never measured it. What I did do was call them to consult on what I needed based on my personal factors and type of camping. I have found that I'm really happy with the quilt set and it has exceeded my expectations. I hope in your case, that will be your ultimate experience as well but some disappointment is understandable if it's shorter than you expected based on finished measurement.
