I asked the rangers in Caesar's Head SP right next door about hammocks and all they said was "LNT means LNT." Works for me.

Edisto SP in SC actually encourages hammocks from what I hear.

FL state parks prohibit tying anything to trees, including hammocks.

    Hey Jeff,
I read your trip report of that week on your site a few weeks ago.

I last camped at Jones Gap about 10 years ago, when my sons were 9 and 11. Your stories reminded me of what a great place it is.
Thanks for the inspiration to go back.

btw, Jones Gap Falls and the Middle Saluda are running really heavy right now.

Here in SC, I've hung at several State Parks, Dreher Island on Lake Murray, Devils Fork on Lake Jocassee, Sadler's Creek on Lake Hartwell, and now Jones Gap. I have never had anyone complain.

Glad you like the story, swampfox. I kept meaning to hike the Swampfox Passage when I lived in Charleston but never got around to it...wanted to see the Pitcher Plants and stuff. Maybe I'll make it back there one day to do the whole hike.

One thing I do try to do though, when setting up...

I try to orient my tarp in such a way that at first glance, my tarp looks very much like a tent, or just a tarp. Sometimes I wait to set up my hammock until amost dark.
Excellent advice, I've gone that route myself. Or for that matter, I set the hammock up well after dark or right at bedtime. Much less likely to draw attention that way, at least until the next A.M..

Ive run into a similar situation trying to geocache in GA state parks----if you make a formal request, youve kind of painted them in a corner, they have to worry about liability etc. ---and they usually play it safe and say no. (thanks lawyers for ruining everything!LOL) But if you just do it, and are discrete, you give them an out, if something happend, like if you hang in their park, fall and get hurt and try to take them to court etc, they can say you didnt ask for permission etc. Forgiveness is indeed easier to get than permission! Ive also found that the official rules and the actual local rules are very different.
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

Add Alabama to state parks that were fine with hammocking. I hung at Cheaha State Park after Thanksgiving with no problems.
