    Deer antler toggles??

I'm just learning to splice and made my first set of whoopie slings yesterday. Here is a couple of deer antler toggles I made today with Amsteel continuous loops. Anyone use deer antler for toggles in their Marlin spike hitch suspension? I'm thinking with much movement they may slide out of the Marlin spike hitch due to the extreme amount of taper?? I guess I'll find out. LOL

Those are very cool! I think you should be ok. One way to find out I guess!

They're shaped just like a marlinspike! They have to work.

I would worry about sliding as you mentioned.

I would gently file a strap's width groove around the center of the toggle. I think that should do it.

    Way cool idea!

Those look super nice! Good job.
I don't think you'll have any issue with slip.
Looks like you have enough loop to bring it behind the strap and loop it over the point of the spike if needed.

I've used deer antler for toggles exclusively for years. They work great. After inserted into the MSH I just give them a tug and they are secure. Never even had a close call.

Really cool idea. I have a lot of antlers; might just have to repurpose some!

Great idea. Definitely strong enough. I like the idea of shaping them to fit your straps.

What if the deer decides to wander off in the middle of the night?

I would be careful about filing a groove. If you create too much of an edge, it could wear on and break your strap. If you create too much of a fillet, it could be useless and just slip off. You may consider drilling a second hold in the opposite end to attach your cordage too and hold the spike in place. I thought I saw a vendor do something similar, but I can't find it.
