Pretty good idea guys. For a real quick safeguard, I just clip on a double mitten hook to each loop. The little plastic piece keeps the loop from going through, and I can hang something off it if I want.

Also - regarding the weakening of amsteel. Lets say the whoopie sling weakens the rope by a whopping 50% (some cordage experts say it's more like 3%, but that may be a bit too liberal a rating). I use 7/64ths which is rated at 1600lbs.

If my sling drops its rating to 800 at the in and/or out point, its still rated for more than my hammock fabric, right?

I just came across this thread today. Great ideas on how not to lose the adjustable loop. I am confused though, as to what everyone is meaning by the "taper". Can anyone clue me in? (pictures help )

    First page here

I use gargoyles idea of adding a small plastic bead to the loop.

See the very first post on this Whoopie Sling thread. The first set of pictures illustrates how to make the taper.

Edit: man, am I slow.... way to go, Opie!

Thanks for the link guys. I'll be catching up on the whole thread eventually.

Having read the first post by SlowBro, the taper is just what I thought it was. I guess what is unclear to me now is just how does this taper make the strength of the WS greater than a WS without a taper?? Unless I have read the posts in this thread incorrectly, this is what I'm getting from them.

The taper prevents a sudden change in rope diameter. Its spreads the forces over a larger area.

I think its far more important on the larger diameters than the 7/64. Or more specifically the 12 strands, which start at 1/8 and up.

Thanks opie. I just picked up on that by doing some further reading on the instructional thread you and Frawg suggested. Thanks again for the help so even I could understand.
