Grosgain tarp edges

Hello all,

I have some questions about diy tarps. My next fit project is going to be a Mac cat standard clone, my question though is how do I create an even and professional looking rolled hem edge for the cat cuts? I was also thinking of adding grosgrain to all of the edges to give it some extra durability and strength but I don't know how much weight that would add to the overall weight. Do you think it would be worth the trouble and extra weight. I would like to keep the tarp weight around 15 oz but as always lighter would be nicer within reason.

You could avoid all of these issues by making your tarp out of SilPoly or MEMBRANE Sil from Ripstop by the Roll or Xenon Sil from Dutchware. Cat cuts are unnecessary with these fabrics and they are very light. Adding grosgrain around the edges isn't really necessary with any material.

Binding isn't needed for any reason but aesthetics.

I put grosgrain binding on my son's Marpat tarp it looks really sharp. It certainly isn't required but it does look nice. Extra weight is very minimal. I like to think it added some strength but that is open to debate.

That tarp looks very sharp I would be interested in hearing how heavy it is and how much you would like for it!
