heres a question for you, since our hammock are inspired and loosly based on traditional Mayan designs, how did they store extra items, did they have a type of gear hammock? Are there any other traditional designs that can be adapted to our use to store extra/loose gear? Just curious.........................
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,

What I think is that just like us, when we use the hammock and we see a need for some something or other, we put our minds to it and figure out a way to make it. The Mayan's probably did the same thing. Got extra gear... make a pocket/sack and tie it to the hammock. Have you ever looked at Native American Indian's clothing? Not a pocket to be found. But they made pouches in every shape you can think of, to put their extra gear.

I'm no Anthropologist, but weren't the original hammocks simply fishing nets that people hung up at the end of the day so they could sleep? That's the impression I've always been under.

I use a gear hammock consistently when canoe camping. Because I have a lot of the stuff related to group life such as fire starters, rope, etc. it is a great way to keep stuff organized and dry. I simply have a 3X6 piece of rip stop with a channel in the ends and simply rope under my Claytor. It is great, keeps stuff off the ground, dry, and centralized. I keep all my "pouches" in it.

I took a daisy chain cam strap that we designed for securing rafting gear in whitewater rafts and put that around a tree, hooked a carabiner to it, and hooked it to my pack. Now I use a dry bag pack when I go kayak camping so I didn't have to worry about the ants that were crawing on it in the morning getting inside. This does makes me worry about my regular pack though.
Any ideas? And are there any ideas for keeping ants and other tree crawlers away from my hammock?

I wonder if back then they used small hammocks also to put gear in? Like they do on bigger sailboats- gear storage loft hanging on the wall? This discussion makes me wonder about all the little hammocks in sailboats I have seen.
